The construction was commissioned in 1527 at the behest of Pope Clement VII to assure there would be a water reserve, should the city come under siege. Based on its important size and accurate project layout, the Well may still be considered, today, as a formidable, ambitious, and majestic enterprise.

Important hydro geological research preceded this work of skilled engineering and was completed in 1537 under Pope Paul III Farnese. The cylindrical hole solution of a double helicoidal staircase is very interesting: it measures 54 metres deep and has a diameter of 13 metres with one up and one down 248 steps and 72 large windows. Everything is particularly evocative.

Take advantage of the opportunity to descend into the Well and experience the unique views and light effects it offers.
