The cathedral of orvieto in a glass of wine

To fully appreciate a wine, it is not enough to know how to taste it; you also need to know its history.

The names of Cantina Altarocca’s firstborn wines pay homage to our city’s most important work of art: the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, better known as Orvieto Cathedral.

Let’s start with Orvieto Classico DOC Arcosesto, a fresh and delicate white wine, perfect from aperitif to dessert. The round arch is one of the most recurring structural elements in the architectural harmony of the Duomo: it is present both on the external façade, above the twelve aedicules enclosing the apostolic figures, and inside, delimiting the central nave with its six bays.

From classic white to traditional red, Librato, Rosso Orvietano DOC. A barbecue is definitely the best occasion to enjoy it with friends. The name Librato clearly refers to balance. The Cathedral of Orvieto is “equi-balanced” from an architectural and stylistic point of view, despite the

With Albaco, the Orvieto Classico Superiore DOC, the etymology goes deeper, digging deep… into the rock. From the Latin “albus,” white, like the travertine that makes up the alternating colors of the external side facades of the Duomo and the internal supporting elements. An elegant wine with a rich and complex taste, which surprises with more daring combinations such as fried foods or cheeses.

The white travertine of the external walls of the Duomo is enhanced by the contrast with the black basalt. A lava stone in a land of volcanic origin, the same land on which the vineyards of Cantina Altarocca are located, a characteristic that gives the right minerality to Lavico, a Rosso Umbria IGT made from Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon grapes. Decisive and harmonious, this wine is able to stand up to the more decisive flavors of the territory, such as game, cured meats, and aged cheeses.various interventions of many artists over more than three centuries of work.

From the artistic and more traditional references analyzed so far, let’s move on to the definition of the “trademark” with Bianco d’Altarocca and Rosso d’Altarocca. The former is a pure Chardonnay and the latter a Merlot, which are aged for 7 and 14 months respectively in barriques before bottling. These two strong and distinctive identities pair perfectly with the king of our land’s fruits, the truffle, in its white and black varieties.

The latest addition to the Altarocca family is Rilievo, which enriches the range of products with an elegant Brut Rosé Sparkling Wine. The name draws attention back to Orvieto Cathedral, in particular to the numerous bas-reliefs that characterize its wonderful façade. Rilievo is a wine of “depth,” perfect for toasting special moments.
